A (late) fan letter
I posted on the excellent web site you have, and I
just had to drop you a line!
Naturally I will begin by admitting I'm a Spongebob
Squarepants fan, and that's where I heard Tiny's
"Living in the Sunlight, Loving in the Moonlight" for
the first time in a long time.
That song made me so happy I cried! That's because my
mother, may she rest in peace, and I used to watch
Tiny on tv together-- we both loved him a great deal.
She passed away in March of 2000, and one of Tiny's
songs crossed my mind, as tribute to her and to him.
It was that song.
It struck me that Tiny Tim deserves to be listed in
my line of descent-- Buddhist priests have a line of
'ancestors', all masters who taught them. Tiny Tim
taught me some of my most valuable lessons.
My family is Converso, Sefardic Jewish, and my mother
believed Tiny was Jewish. We were, of course,
practicing Byzantine Catholics. I was surprised to
learn Tiny was Catholic too. I'll bet that, like me,
he once thought about going into the priesthood. I'm
not at all surprised that he had the Lebanese name
"priest".
His joy, his freedom, his eccentricity, being so far
ahead of his time, cannot be forgotten. I don't mind
telling you, I LOVED that man, and I miss him sorely.
And yes, I just as dearly loved his music.
This is all I can offer in the way of anything
personal; Tiny Tim is the first person I ever saw on
television who was fun, hilarious and interesting. I
knew also that he was a deeply spiritual and
philosophical man.
He truly was blessed.
Thank you for your attention
and please receive my blessing.
